General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) is a supplier of advanced electromagnetic systems, related power equipment and other high technology products for a variety of government and commercial applications. These include products such as the design and fabrication of linear motors, superconducting and conventional rotating motors, power inverters, high-energy capacitors, radiation monitoring systems, high-voltage direct current power distribution systems, and numerous other products.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Machinist to join our Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) Group located in Tupelo, MS.


  • Responsible for performing moderately complex functions related to machine tools. A Machinist plans, lays out work, sets up and operates all types of large CNC Machine Tools to produce parts and fixtures to exacting tolerances and dimensions from drawings and work instructions.

  • Must be familiar with GD&T. Must have ability to work with programmers to help troubleshoot problems.

  • Performs moderately complex functions related to CNC machine set-up and operation.

  • Operates and performs machine set up of Computer Numerically Control (CNC) horizontal turning lathes and precision milling machines.

  • Must be familiar with using G and M codes.

  • Set up & Operate CNC VTL with 118” chuck.

  • Set up & Operate Horizontal Boring Mill up to 393” travel.

  • Set up and Operate Okuma 5 axis Gantry mill with 12 meter table.

  • Set up & Operate CNC Lathe with 78” swing.

  • Set up & Operate Horizontal Mill with 500M pallet size and 1,100LBS Max.

  • Reviews engineering drawings from sketches, graphic illustrations or verbal/written correspondence to plan the fabrication sequence to fabricate parts to specifications in a timely manner.

  • Determines cutting tools to be used, method of holding and machine speeds and feeds.

  • Operates metrology equipment and record and document metrology information.

  • Must be able to understand CMM reports.

  • Prepares the fabrication and metrology of components to specifications in a timely manner in a fast paced, schedule driven program.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

  • Ability to keep work area clean.

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires an associate's degree, technical/trade school training or equivalent and seven or more years related experience. Additional experience may be substituted for formal education.

  • Must be customer focused and possess the ability to perform complex set-up and fabrication of machined parts with little or no direction.

  • In-depth knowledge of machining equipment including ability to use judgment and safe practices.

  • Ability to read, interpret and explain engineering drawings, sketches and verbal and written instructions.

  • Skills to maintain the flow of work within the unit using independent judgment in solving moderately complex problems and recommending solutions.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and written communication skills to interface with employees and management and basic computer skills.

  • The ability to work both independently and lead in a team environment is essential as is the ability to work extended hours as required.
