We have a challenging and demanding opportunity for a Power Electronics Engineer to join the Power Systems group of the DIII-D (National Fusion Facility) in San Diego, CA. Join our team and participate in cutting edge technology in support of this important DOE funded research program. This position reports to the Manager of the Power Systems group. This position will be primarily responsible for the operations and maintenance of the large DIII-D magnet power supplies. In addition, this position will be responsible for the installation and commissioning of new power supply systems, which are anticipated to be installed in the next two years. Assesses engineering issues and develops solutions to meet the program goals and objectives. This group is responsible for the operations and maintenance of all facility primary AC power (138kVac, 69kVac, 4160Vac, 480Vac etc). In addition, the group is responsible for the DIII-D magnet power supplies ranging from 300Vdc@ 1500A to 1200Vdc @ 200kA.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for applying innovative approaches to resolving unusual or complex engineering problems.

  • Manage all aspects of new power supply projects including preparing and participating in design reviews, maintaining schedules, developing assembly and testing plans.

  • Responsibilities will require the integration of multiple disciplines and departments.

  • Collaborate with technical staff, program managers and/or Division/Group executive management to develop and implement current and future system needs.

  • Manage and initiate the planning of engineering projects and develop innovative designs or modifications to meet project goals.

  • Manage, document findings, communicate results to the engineering staff, make technical presentations, and may represent the group as the prime technical power supply contact.

  • Provide direction to design or technical staff and will lead a team of technicians.

  • Ensure proper engineering discipline is implemented for all analysis and design, and appropriate engineering processes are followed.

  • Requires ability to problem solve to keep projects moving forward while discovery occurs.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a Bachelors degree, Masters degree or PhD in Engineering or related technical field and progressively complex engineering experience as follows; six or more years experience with a Bachelors degree, four or more years experience with a Masters degree, and two or more with a PhD. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.

  • Demonstrates an extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones with some experience in project leadership.

  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment.

  • Must possess strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required enabling an effective interface with other departments and/or professionals, and capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact, as well as providing leadership and guidance to less experienced professionals.

  • Must be able to formulate plans based on the development of innovative new designs in resolving advanced technical engineering problems.

  • Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment. Able to work extended hours as required. A Professional Engineering License, original work(s) published in professional engineering journals, and invited to present one or more original works to an engineering symposium are desirable.
