We have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Mechanical Systems Engineering team located in Huntsville, AL.

With limited direction, this position supports the mechanical systems engineering staff in the analysis, design, manufacturing, investigation and resolution of engineering problems of moderate scope and complexity. Assignments are normally outlined in terms of broad specifications, objectives, possible results anticipated and critical reference points requiring special attention. Guides the successful resolution of engineering problems, serves as a consulting resource of engineering knowledge, applies the latest technological advancements to the problem, and may function in a project leadership role. Documents findings, communicates results to engineering staff, makes technical presentations, and may represent the organization as the prime technical contact on small identifiable projects. Provides direction to design or technical staff and may lead a team of moderately experienced professional staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Applies technical knowledge to analyze, investigate and resolve assigned routine mechanical or manufacturing engineering problems.

  • Obtains and analyzes test data.

  • Review or perform detail designs with an emphasis on the manufacturing of a part or sub-assembly of a missile system or nano-satellite.

  • Generates detailed drawings with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing complaint with ASME Y14.5M.

  • Works with Manufacturing Engineering and Project Management to resolve any design related issue influencing production and to improve product design.

  • Develops appropriate documentation of findings and implemented solutions, and communicates results to project engineering staff.

  • May be required to make technical presentations to project staff.

  • Maintains the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; nine or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, seven or more years of experience with a masters degree, or four or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance is required.

  • Must have design experience with either SolidWorks or ProE CREO.

  • Demonstrates extensive understanding of advanced aerospace materials and manufacturing processes to produce unique and innovative design solutions.

  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; discern and apply creative solutions to unique design challenges; strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively interface with other departments, customers, government representatives, and/or professionals. Capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact; and, the ability to provide leadership and guidance to less experienced professionals.

  • Familiarity with commercial, aircraft and/or military testing methods and the generation and execution of specific testing requirements.

  • Experience in defense program acquisition or aerospace industry is desired.

  • Production and fabrication experience is a plus.

  • Machine design experience is a plus.
